SVP & CIO, McAfee

Scott Howitt is Senior Vice President and Chief Information Officer (CIO) at McAfee. He is responsible for McAfee’s corporate systems, leading the Information Security and IT organizations, and for driving the company’s cloud transformation. Alignment of technology to company strategy, partnerships with product and sales teams to ignite innovation, and positive customer experiences are guiding principles on which Scott and his teams focus.

Scott joined McAfee from MGM Resorts International, where he served as Chief Information Security Officer (CISO) and CIO while leading the information security and privacy program for all 27 resorts worldwide. Prior to MGM Resorts, his leadership journey included executive roles at JCPenney, Alliance Data, and Electronic Data Systems (EDS). He was also a Commissioner on Nevada’s DHS Cyber Security Commission and was a founding member and served on the Board of the Retail and Hospitality ISAC. Scott earned his B.A. in Physics from the University of Texas and attained his CISSP in 2005. Back in 2004, Marcin Kleczynski picked up a nasty malware infection one day while cruising the Internet in search of video games. This despite having a big-name paid antivirus in place.

It was the family computer, so his parents said, you have to make this right. No big deal, said Marcin. He worked as a computer tech after school in Chicago. How long could it take to remove a small bit of malicious code? Try three solid days. Three days searching the Internet and consulting with other people on security forums like spywareinfoforum.com who had similar problems. Who had also come to the same two conclusions:

1. There was a lot of new malware out there.

2. Traditional antivirus wasn’t up to the task.

So Marcin set out to build a better malware fighter. He taught himself code and eventually engineered a small but highly effective anti-malware tool called Rogue Remover that quickly became popular in the security community. Founded in 2013 by mathematicians from the University of Cambridge, Darktrace was the first company to develop an AI system for cyber security.

The company was seed-funded by Invoke Capital, a specialist technology investment fund headed by Dr Mike Lynch OBE, and the Invoke team was instrumental in working with the founders in the early days.

Darktrace founders also include cyber security experts from government intelligence backgrounds, united in their mission to fundamentally transform the ability of organizations to defend their most critical assets in the face of rising cyber-threat.

Darktrace’s pioneering technology, the Enterprise Immune System, applies AI to the cyber defense challenge for the first time, detecting cyber-threats that existing, legacy systems cannot.

It quickly became clear that the technology was powerful enough to identify a diverse range of threats at their earliest stages – including insider attacks, latent vulnerabilities, cloud-based threats and even state-sponsored espionage.

In 2016, Darktrace’s leadership in AI was reinforced with the launch of the first-ever autonomous response technology, Darktrace Antigena.
